Block Schedule
For four years now we have been using a block schedule in
order to better integrate the academic and creative arts. We are
excited about this way in which we "do
school." We have found that our students emerge better equipped
for their lives after high school and are still well-prepared for college.
Characteristics of the block schedule at JECS:
-
Longer periods,
leading to better grasp of the concepts being taught
-
More integration of
learning styles in the classroom
-
More time for labs
and class projects
-
Built-in time for
mentoring, chapels, field trips, tutoring, testing outside of
regularly scheduled class times
-
More supervised time
for students to master subject material with more actual hands-on
experience
-
Ability to offer a larger
variety of electives in the creative arts
-
Math and Chemistry classes are taught every day
Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays are used for our core classes. Each of the Monday and Friday classes is 75 minutes long, and on Wednesday they are 60 minutes long in order to accommodate time for chapel.
Tuesdays and Thursdays are used primarily for creative classes. There are three 90-minute classes and two 45-minute classes, accommodating longer electives as well as shorter ones and the math and chemistry classes.
